example, paul ryan and mitt romney. paul ryan's budget, huge opportunity, and of course the lies that paul ryan himself has uttered like in his convention speech. biden is not going to sit back and take that i assume. >> no, i don't think so. and i think people will be watching for daylight between paul ryan and mitt romney. paul ryan not wanting to drag his own career down with this guy who has been kind of on the losingen of the stick. we saw that happen with mccain and palin, right. somebody wanting to make their own career at the expense of someone else's. but joe biden is a thoughtful man, an experienced leader and he is committed to his partner in this, president obama. here is the other thing, joe biden is a heck of a story teller. his gaffes come with a lot of affection, because they are usually in the telling of a really important human story. >> jennifer: i agree with you. but do you go along with the convention wisdom that this debate matters so much more in light of the president's less than stellar performa

ryan was defending romney. what was biden doing, defending his mom and dad, the 47%, the middle class. and that's the message that the obama information wanted out there. we are fighting, we are passionate, we go overboard maybe a little bit in defense of the middle class and wanted to keep ryan bollixed up. >> pelley: one of the subcontexts is voters might be looking at both men thinking which one of these guys could be president and that goes to norah's point that vice president biden was sort of looking askance at paul ryan and sort of taking advantage of his youth. >> reporter: i think there's a down side, potentially, to that. the knock against the clinton administration that the romney people are trying to play on is that they're arrogant. they've gotten kind of lax. they've gotten settled with themselves. and this notion that kind of you can laugh off the things-- that could for some voters come across as a little bit too proud of yourself when you have presided over an economy that's this week. >> pelle

paul ryan laid out what the romney/ryan agenda would be for the future. you didn't hear anything new at all from vice president biden about what the obama administration's going to do to get down unemployment, to spark growth. all the things they've been failing at. they have laid out no vision at all to address that. >> his point was that vice president joe biden was inappropriate and insubstantial. what was your take? >> i thought he was passionate. i thought he was personal and i thought he was very substantial. i thought he really won the debate. i think that he was willing to be specific in a way paul ryan wasn't. i think paul ryan did not have an answer to the question of what's your $5 trillion tax plan, what exactly what benefits are you going to cut? what exactly are you going to do? i don't think he had an answer on afghanistan. the only thing paul ryan had a specific answer on he and romney are willing to take away a woman's right to choose. >> if you look at what happened afterwards and hearing the talking heads this morning, democrats thought
